We had a hiatus yesterday as I was away from the office dealing with “stuff” – we all have it unfortunately

Here we are with today’s free freelance writing job listing and I expect this listing to start growing as we commence pulling jobs from other sources aside from Craigslist.

Craigslist has been a good work resource for me over the years but you have to be choosy. There are a number of frauds and scams perpetrated online and writing gigs is ripe for taking the unwary.

A popular writing scam is to ask for a sample article on a the buyer’s given topic – this is reasonable but I personally don’t do it anymore. My reasoning is simple – I have a portfolio which more than adequately demonstrates my abilities. If a client is not impressed that my work has been published by the likes of Business Week or PCWorld, then no number of samples I produce is going to convince them to give me the assignment. In addition, if you are a scammer looking for free copy, simply advertize a job and then ask every writer who applies for a “sample” to your specification. With a dozen writers submitting “samples” you can get a lot of content without paying a dime and of course, after getting the work in you simply have to tell the bidding writers that they didn’t win the job, but hey, better luck next time when I have a project.

It doesn’t matter if you have been writing for a week or for years, setting up a portfolio is important and especially one where potential clients can see your work out there. If you are just starting, use your existing pieces as the starting point and if you have an extensive portfolio, get the work arranged so it is in one place (or at least have all the links to online published articles and work in one place so it is easy to get to them and to refer to them in your pitch).
